Going to the movies to see bits and pieces of concert rehearsal footage edited and mashed together, it is hard to know what to expect, and even harder to expect something great. Even for a die hard Michael Jackson fan and especially since any trailers for the film were scarcely revealing. Promotion for this event was simply unnecessary. People are going to see this no matter what.
This Is It Is More Than You Could Hope For
As it turns out, what you get is more than you could hope for. What you get is not just an up close view of singing and rehearsals. What you get is an intimate experience with an elusive talent and personality. You get to witness the perfectionist and attentiveness of Michael Jackson.
This movie, if it can be called that, brings Michael Jackson to life in a way he has rarely been seen. This is footage for his own homework, and it is evident just what a perfectionist he was. Michael Jackson reveals in candid moments his mannerisms and attitude and what he demands of those he works with in order to pull off the most spectacular entertainment experience possible for the audience.
Michael Jackson for The Fans
No doubt this film is a cash grab for beneficiaries of Jackson’s death timed with the posthumous release of the album of the same title This Is It. But this is also for the fans. Fans of Michael Jackson are true and loving. They have endured with him much strife over the years through criminal allegations and extreme personal scrutiny by the media. But it seems Michael Jackson has gained much more respect in the wake of his death than he did for many years in life.
For the fans, the This Is It movie and CD release is a form of closure. They will get to see what they otherwise never could. After 50 sold out shows in England, which obviously the average North American would not have the opportunity to attend, it was likely that Michael Jackson might well go into retirement. At least this was his stated intentions and reason for the concerts. It was to be a final curtain call: One which would fulfill the dreams of many but certainly leave many more with only their CD collection and media assaults. But the movie has remedied that.
The Final Chapter of His Legacy
This Is It has created an opportunity to see who Michael Jackson really was, to see how it was to work with him, to be in the same room as him, to feel his genuine love for the work that he did, and his dedication to producing nothing but the absolute best for his fans. He was clearly a true showman.
This Is It is exactly what everybody has wanted to see for a long time. It is Michael Jackson, unabashed and uninhibited, singing and dancing and creating something special. As it turns out, he has delivered a final chapter of his legacy in an endearing and positive light.
